Desmids (Zygnematophyceae) from the littoral zone of an urban artificial lake: taxonomic aspects and geographical distribution

Abstract: Aim: Conducting the study of periphytic desmids in two different substrates of the littoral zone of an urban artificial lake, investigating the taxonomic aspects and the geographical distribution of taxa, to contribute to the knowledge of local biodiversity and the state of Paraná. Methods: Sampling was carried out in two sampling stations in three distinct periods, in April of 2015, March of 2016 and 2017, in the Cascavel municipal lake, Paraná, in an epiphytic substrate (scraping of grasses) and another epilithic (scraping of rocky substrate). The samples were stored and later made photos and morphometric analyzes of the recorded microalgae. The taxonomic characterization, frequency of occurrence as well as the geographic distribution for the Paraná State was performed for each taxon. Results: We identified 36 taxa, distributed in 10 genera. The most representative genera were Closterium Nitzsch ex Ralfs and Cosmarium Corda ex Ralfs, respectively. There was a higher occurrence of sporadic taxa (61%), being that Cosmarium pseudoconnatum Nordstedt var. pseudoconnatum and Desmidium grevillei (Kützing ex Ralfs) De Bary were the most frequent taxa. Among the registered taxa, nine were exclusive to the epilithic substrate and only one exclusive to the epiphytic substrate (Netrium digitus (Ralfs) Itzigsohn & Rothe var. digitus), while the remaining 26 taxa occurred in both substrates. Six taxa comprised new records for the Paraná State. Conclusion: The results of this study, although of qualitative nature, are extremely important for future taxonomic and ecological studies, since they serve as a comparative basis for the biogeographic distribution of taxa, which is primordial for studies on the preservation and conservation of biodiversity.
