Diatom communities temporal variation in oligotrophic reservoirs (Guarulhos Productive System, Southeast Brazil)

Simone Alves de Oliveira, Carlos Eduardo de Mattos Bicudo

Aim: Study aimed at analyzing the plankton, periphyton and surface sediments diatom Community structure, and their relation with the environmental variables of two reservoirs, Tanque Grande and Cabuçu. Methods: Three sampling stations were stablished for each reservoir. Water column and periphyton were sampled during the dry (August 2013) and the rainy periods (January 2014). Sediment samples were collected only during the dry period. Diatom samples were oxidized and slides mounted for quantitative and qualitative analyses. Results: Both reservoirs presented low electrical conductivity, pH and nutrients concentration. Diatom community was represented by 30 taxa distributed in 19 genera. All taxa founded in the surface sediments also occurred in the plankton. The highest diatom diversity was found in the periphyton compartment and six species were exclusive of this community. Conclusions: Study allowed concluding that the temporal scale was responsible for the limnologic variation in the two reservoirs. Diatom species composition in the reservoirs did not vary among plankton and surface sediments, and slightly changed in the periphyton. However, there were changes in the species abundances between the climatic periods studied, but great differences between reservoirs were not noticed.
