Author Guidelines

Norms

The articles submitted shall be unpublished and exclusive while in the process of evaluation in the RBCS (see editorial policy). The manuscript shall be presented in its final version, orthographically and grammatically correct in the correspondent idiom, and without revision marks. The length of an article shall be of a minimum of 50.000 and a maximum of 70.000 characters with spaces, including bibliography, tables, and diagrams. Articles shall be submitted in Times New Roman source, size 12, with space 1,5. Articles not complying with these norms will not be submitted to evaluation.

The abstract shall have up to 1.000 characters with spaces, in the same configuration of the article, and shall specify: the problem, the central argument of the article, its contribution to the field of the literature in which it is inscribed, as well as its materials or empirical instances and its methodological choices.

 

Languages

Articles and book reviews can be subjected in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. If approved, they will be published in the original language. Submissions in English may receive peer reviews in that language or in Spanish. Submissions in Spanish and Portuguese may receive peer reviews in one of the three languages. When submitting an article, the author implicitly agrees in receiving peer reviews in those languages as referred above.

 

Text organization

The article’s title shall have, as maximum, 90 characters with spaces. The author(s) name(s) shall be accompanied by the institutional affiliation and the indication of the corresponding city, state, and country, as well as that of the institutional e-mail address.

Mentions to authors along the text shall follow the form – (Author, date) or (Author, date, page), as in the examples: (Jaguaribe, 1962) or (Jaguaribe, 1962, p. 35). In the case of more than one title of the same author in the same year, the differentiation shall be established by adding a letter after the date, as in the examples: (Adorno, 1975a), (Adorno, 1975b), etc.

When inferior to two lines, the quotations shall be expressed in italics in the body of the text, and in italics in a new paragraph when larger than that. They shall be translated to the language used by the article, mentioning in a footnote the translator’s name by occasion of the first translated quotation.

In general, footnotes shall contain only complementary information of substantive nature without exceeding 250 characters with spaces per footnote.

In the articles with tables, tableaux, graphics, and figures, the respective source shall be informed in each case, including those in which the respective elaboration is due to the author himself (for instance: author’s elaboration based on IBGE 2005, or author’s elaboration based on Santos 2002). When the data involved result from a project coordinated by the author, the name of the project shall be informed as a source.

The basic rules for using abbreviations are: use capital letters for abbreviations with up to three characters (ex: USP, PUC, OAB); for all the abbreviations susceptible of pronunciation as words, from 4 characters onwards, use only the first in capital letter (ex: Fapesp, Unicamp, Uerj); for abbreviations, from four characters onwards, but not susceptible of pronunciation as words, use only capital letters (ex: UFMG, UFRJ; ABNT). These rules for the composition of abbreviations shall be applied also to the bibliographic references.

 

Bibliographical criteria

The bibliography shall be indicated in alphabetical order at the final of the article or book review, according to the criteria and rules mentioned below.

Some general criteria are the following:

  • Titles of books, periodicals, newspapers, magazines, disks, motion pictures, paintings, and sculptures shall be expressed always in italics.
  • Names of chapters, poems, songs, as well as titles of articles shall be expressed between quotation marks.
  • Names of newspapers shall be expressed exactly as in the original: for instance, O Estado de S. Paulo, Diário de S. Paulo, Folha de S. Paulo, Jornal do Comércio (Recife).

Bibliographic references shall conform to the following rules, according to the types of materials involved:

  • Book: author’s last name (in capital letters)/COMMA/ author’s first name(s) (in capital and lower-case letters)/PERIOD/year of publication (between parentheses)/ COMMA/ title of the book (in italics)/PERIOD/full name of the translator/PERIOD/number of the edition, if it is not the first/COMMA/place of publication/COMMA/name of the publishing house/PERIOD.

Revision and correction

All the texts will be submitted to a process of ample revision, involving orthography, grammar, and style. Once revised, the texts will be subjected to the approval of the author(s) before the publication. In case the authors do not respond within the agreed time frame, silence will be interpreted as agreement. The revision aims at assuring the adequate comprehension and the formal quality of the texts published by the Journal. The Editorial Commission reserves the right of not publishing articles whose reformulation disregards the suggestions of the text corrector without a reasonable justification.

 

Book reviews

Book reviews shall have titles of up to a maximum of 50 characters with spaces, may contain a bibliography, and shall respect the limit of 20,000 characters with spaces. The manuscript shall be presented in its final version, in a corrected orthographic and grammatical form, and without marks of revision. Book reviews shall be submitted in source Times New Roman, size 12, with space 1.5. Book reviews nonconforming with these norms will not be considered.

 

Exclusive online submission of articles and book reviews

Articles and book reviews shall be submitted exclusively at the page of the Revista Brasileira de Ciências Sociais – RBCS, via Open Journal System – OJS platform, through the address: www.scielo.br/RBCSoc. All the steps indicated for the submission shall be followed. In the case of an article with more than one author, it shall be submitted by the author who will be in contact with the Journal, following all the editorial process and being responsible for answering to the evaluation.

Two archives in .doc or .docx shall be annexed in order to proceed to the online submission. The first of them, directed exclusively to the Editor in the form of a cover letter, shall include the article’s title, abstracts in Portuguese and English, and biographic data of the author(s) (academic degree, academic position, more recent relevant publications, and institutional e-mail address). Such archive may include information revealing the authorship of the text and acknowledgments and is also destined to the inclusion of comments and justifications to the Editor on any aspects related to the course of the evaluation. The second archive is the main document for it will be the one to be read by the ad hoc peer reviewers. For this reason, the article must be sent through this second archive without any kind of reference or information that could identify the author(s), and shall include only the title, the text, and the bibliographical references – excluded those which could permit the identification of the author(s).

Subscriptions

The RBCS does not have anymore a system of subscriptions since from 2016 onwards it will begin to circulate only in open access online format.

 

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • A contribuição é original e inédita, isto é, não publicada em livros, revistas ou periódicos.
  • URLs para as referências foram informadas quando possível.
  • O texto está em espaço 1,5; usa uma fonte de 12-pontos; emprega itálico em vez de sublinhado (exceto em endereços URL); as figuras e tabelas estão inseridas no texto, não no final do documento na forma de anexos.
  • O texto segue os padrões de estilo e requisitos bibliográficos descritos em Diretrizes para Autores, na página Sobre a Revista.
  • Em caso de submissão a uma seção com avaliação pelos pares (ex.: artigos), as instruções disponíveis em Assegurando a avaliação pelos pares cega foram seguidas.
  • O(a) autor(a) informou a filiação institucional, o setor/departamento a que pertence, a cidade e o e-mail institucional
  • O arquivo da submissão está em formato Microsoft Word, OpenOffice ou RTF.
  • Se a submissão contiver nomes originais ou fotos, os (as) autor(es)(as) asseguram que obtiveram autorização ou consentimento livre e esclarecido dos envolvidos.
  • Todos os gráficos, quadros, tabelas e elementos gráficos incluem a fonte original.
  • A contribuição não está sendo avaliada para publicação por outro periódico.

Original Articles

A Revista Brasileira de Ciências Sociais publica artigos inéditos -- não publicados em livros, revistas ou periódicos -- com contribuições substantivas explícitas sobre questões relevantes para as áreas e subáreas que informam empírica e teoricamente o correspondente artigo. Balanços bibliográficos (review essays) apenas serão publicados quando especificamente encomendados pela Comissão Editorial, visto que a ANPOCS edita revista com perfil editorial especializado na difusão dos mesmos. A RBCS publica excepcionalmente, por iniciativa da Comissão Editorial e da Diretoria da Anpocs, textos que compõem dossiês temáticos, submetidos aos mesmos critérios dos artigos originais. A Revista não aceita propostas de dossiês. As características de forma específicas de artigos e resenhas podem ser consultadas na seção das “Normas para a apresentação de colaborações”. A Revista aceita submissão de artigos e resenhas em português, espanhol e inglês, que serão publicados em sua língua original.

Reviews

Com o intuito de contribuir à circulação da produção nacional e internacional de conhecimento relevante para as ciências sociais a RBCS veicula regularmente resenhas. A Revista publica resenhas de livros relevantes para o campo das ciências sociais em geral e para os debates em curso nas três grandes áreas das ciências sociais no Brasil. Todas as resenhas são avaliadas pelo Editor de Resenhas e a Comissão Editorial considerando a adequação à política e escopo editoriais da Revista.

Em algumas circunstâncias, como no caso de obras reconhecidamente importantes para o debate das ciências sociais no país, é possível a solicitação de resenhas e o convite de resenhistas. 

As características de forma específicas de artigos e resenhas podem ser consultadas na seção das “Normas para a apresentação de colaborações”. A Revista aceita submissão de artigos e resenhas em português, espanhol e inglês, que serão publicados em sua língua original.

 

Editorial

Excepcionalmente a RBCS contempla apresentações para sinalizar alguma característica extraordinária do número em questão.

Interviews

A RBCS publica excepcionalmente entrevistas por iniciativa da Comissão Editorial e da Diretoria da Anpocs, submetidas aos mesmos critérios dos artigos originais. A Revista não aceita propostas de entrevistas.

Copyright Notice

Ao submeter um artigo ou resenha, os(as) autores(as) se comprometem a não enviar o mesmo texto a outro periódico durante o processo de avaliação. Inversamente, a Revista não acolhe artigos que ainda estejam em avaliação em outros periódicos. A Revista tampouco acolherá duas submissões simultâneas de um(a) mesmo(a) autor(a): entende-se que configura simultaneidade a submissão de novo artigo enquanto outro ainda não foi publicado ou recusado.


O(a) autor(a) mantém o direito autoral sob o artigo publicado e a RBCS/ANPOCS detém o direito de primeira publicação. A Revista adota licença CC-BY utilizada internacionalmente pelos principais periódicos e publicadores de acesso aberto, em concordância com o SciELO. Tal licença maximiza a disseminação dos artigos. Entende-se que todo(a) autor(a) de artigo publicado na RBCS concorda com o uso desse tipo de licença.


Reproduções de artigos devem referir a fonte original (Rev. bras. ciênc. soc..), fascículo, volume e ano de publicação.
