Abstract

The work tests the existence of the Kuznets Environmental Curve (CKA) in the relation between GDP per capita and solid waste generation in Brazilian municipalities. In addition, it identifies factors associated with the production of waste in the country. Panel data models were estimated for the period from 2011 to 2015. The results confirmed the CKA hypothesis for the production of solid household waste in the municipalities of the country. In relation to the other variables, it was observed that the charge for the provision of the service and the selective collection tend to cause a decrease in the solid waste generation per capita. Using the municipalities of the Northeast region as reference, it was observed that the production of solid wastes is lower in the municipalities of the Southeast and South regions. For the municipalities of the North and Central-West regions, the differences were not significant.
