A DISAGGREGATED ANALYSIS OF THE BRAZILIAN EXPORTS
A CONTRIBUTION TO STRUCTURALIST-KALDORIAN LITERATURE
Abstract
For Kaldor, the virtuous cycle of growth in an economy would start with the increase in exports of technology-intensive products. Given the increase in brazilian exports in the first five years of the 2000s, this paper analyzed the importance of trade relations in the Structuralist-Kaldorian perspective. Therefore, we used the input-output methodology with brazilian exports disaggregated to MERCOSUR and high-income countries. The results showed that an increase in exports from high-income countries and total exports impacted the commodities sector. When the increase in exports is due to the MERCOSUR, the most affected sectors are those of high and medium technological intensities. These findings imply that greater trade integration with Latin American neighbors, whose production structure has similar technological maturity, maybe a strategy to trigger the kaldorian virtuous cycle both in Brazil and in other Latin American countries.
