Schmoller was the main name of the German historical school and led the German academic environment of economics in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The author criticized the a-historical character of the economic thought of the 19th century and the use of abstract and deductive methods already present in the economic thought. Schmoller was a pioneer in the investigation of the institutions and organizations of the economic life, subject that has been increasingly investigated by the economic literature since the 1970s. Regarding the key components of modern economies, he underlined how the institutions of modern national economies originated and co-evolved with the institutions of national states. The author developed an historical and ethical economic approach, which rejects the division of labor in the humanities. He defended social reform as a means of reducing the social damage of capitalism and promoting national unity.
