David McNally’s recent book, Blood and Money: War, Slavery, Finance, and Empire, is a relevant contribution to debates about historic genesis and natures of money. Based on a marxist approach, McNally reads the history of money according to the emblematic historical cases of Anciant Greece, Early England and current United States. Against mainstream, McNally highlights that money, far from being a neutral element, is an abstract dominations mechanism, and since it’s genesis is attached to different forms of violence. The work also presentes financial and monetary arguments that contribute to chartalist approach considerations. Thereby, although a more rigorous conceptual development lacks in some points of it’s argumantation, the book is of huge interest to all those that desire to enhance in the debate about genesis and nature of money.
