Some Aspects of Urban Slavery in Recife (1827-1837)
Abstract
Using economic data about slavery published in the newspaper Diário de Pernambuco between 1827 and 1837, the present study finds the following results. First, between 1827 and 1835, the median price of captive workers increased by 400%, then dropped by almost 45% until 1837. Second, the subsistence of a slave was 120 réis a day, while his earnings net income, even in simple occupations, as a street vendor, was 240 réis. Thus, a worker like this could produce a gross value equal to that of its acquisition in little more than 5 years. Third, in loans between individuals, the captives were used as collateral for an average value of 100$000, and the interest rate used was 27% per year.
