Abstract
The hypothesis of this paper is that the performance of domestic demand has significantly contributed to the observed transformations in the Brazilian manufacturing industry over the last 20 years. The main goal is to introduce the role of domestic demand - which has been virtually absent in the Brazilian debate on industrial performance. In order to do so, this paper divides the two decades of the 21st century into four subperiods and then studies the performance of manufacturing industry over each of them. The analysis examines the traditional indicators and also develops an intra-sector analysis based on the criteria of Schumpeterian efficiency and Keynesian efficiency.
