This article analyzes the evolution of the repurchase agreement (repo) operations of the Central Bank of Brazil, which had a sharp growth from 2002 to 2020. The method of analysis is the decomposition of the each factor that conditions repos. This method permits to point out which factors greatly contributed to the remarkable increase in the repo’s stock over the period under analysis. The conclusions show that the single factor that added the most to the growth of the repos in Brazil was the interest payment on them made by the Brazilian Central Bank.
