Household indebtedness has been a striking feature of the Brazilian economy since 2005. With the aim of identifying the specificities of the behavior of free credit to individuals and its prospects, this work analyzes the main characteristics of household indebtedness in Brazil since 2005 until March 2022. The article aims to understand how we arrived at an evident situation of excessive debt with a high level of financial fragility among families. The article finally analyzes how the measures taken throughout 2022 aimed at consignment would have further deepened this process and discusses the challenges posed to the new Government elected in 2022
