This article aims to demonstrate that the US economic mainstream has been undergoing internal questioning since the 2008 global financial crisis, but mainly after the COVID-19 pandemic, especially regarding fiscal policy. A qualitative research methodology is used, through the selection, analysis, and critical evaluation of papers by authors considered to be members of the mainstream. If before, based on the conceptual framework of the New Consensus Macroeconomics, fiscal policy played a passive role, it should now be in charge of stabilizing economic activity and the level of employment, especially (but not only) in situations where monetary policy is restricted by the zero lower bound. In conclusion, these changes point to an intense debate within the mainstream itself, in rethinking fiscal policy activism, its objectives, metrics, and instruments, in line with the unfolding of crises and the needs imposed by reality.
