Author Guidelines

Authors' Contribution

História (São Paulo) recommends that authorship be based on the following criteria:

it constitutes a substantial contribution to the formulation of a research problem, as well as its theoretical and methodological analysis;
results from analyses of historical sources and their interpretation.
participate in the writing of the work and the critical revision of the intellectual content for the version to be published.

Whenever an article has more than one author, the contribution of each must be specified using the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT) standard.

In addition, authors may not have more than one article under evaluation in the journal, and must respect the minimum interval of 2 years between the publication of one article and the submission of another for evaluation.

Manuscript preparation and format

To submit an article to História (São Paulo) you need to register on the Open Journal System (OJS) platform and log in to the system. Manuscripts must be submitted to the journal exclusively via online submission: https://submission.scielo.br/index.php/his/submissions. When submitting the manuscript, the author(s) must provide their ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) identifier.

The journal requires a minimum doctoral degree for the submission of articles and dossier proposals. Authors with a doctorate in progress will be accepted to submit critical comments on documents, interviews and reviews.

Articles should be between 15 and 30 pages long, including notes and references. They must include a title, abstract, three keywords in Portuguese and English and in the language in which they were written, if in Spanish, French or Italian. The contribution must be original and unpublished, not currently being evaluated by another publication and without indication of authorship.

Reviews must be between 5 and 8 pages long and present works published in Portuguese in the last two years, or in a foreign language in the last three years, in the field of History. They must have their own title in Portuguese and English and present publishing data, the author's background and their relationship with the work being reviewed, objectives and methodology, main arguments and conclusions. They must critically analyse the work, its impact on historiography and its place in the debates on the subject. Reviews that only summarise the work will not be accepted. Reviews must be accompanied by a summary/abstract and three keywords in Portuguese and English. The bibliography used must be referenced at the end of the text. Authors of reviews should be aware of situations that could be characterised as a "conflict of interest".

Interviews should not exceed 10 pages in length and follow the question-answer format. They should contain an introduction capable of detailing the conditions of their production and situating the interviewee's contribution to the field of historiography or field of knowledge to which they are linked. They do not require an abstract or keywords. The interviewee's ORCID must be inserted (if applicable).

Critical comments on documents should be no shorter than 2 pages and no longer than 8, typed in the same way as articles, with the exception of the abstract and keywords. They must be composed as a research note on an unpublished source, the publication of which must be accompanied by an authorisation regarding copyright or the custodian institution. Critical comments should contain information and contextual data about the document that can be used to analyse it in the future, as well as a justification as to why it is important to make the document available. There is no limit to the length of the document to be published, but the journal reserves the right not to publish material that is too long.

All submissions must be sent in Times New Roman, 12 point font, 1.5 spacing and with 3 cm margins. All texts must be submitted after spelling and grammar checks. The journal publishes contributions in Portuguese, English, Spanish, French and Italian.
Short textual quotations (up to three lines) should be inserted in the text, in inverted commas and without italics (if double inverted commas are used in the original bibliography, use single inverted commas). Long textual quotations (more than three lines) should be in a separate paragraph, indented 4.0 cm from the left margin, justified, in a smaller font than that used in the text, single-spaced and without inverted commas. For direct and indirect quotations, we use the author-date system (NBR 10520/2023).
Deletions, interpolations, additions, comments, emphases or highlights should be indicated as follows. The full stop should be used to end the sentence and not the citation. a) deletions: [...]; b) interpolations, additions or comments: [ ]; c) emphasis or highlights: underlined, bold or italicised.
References should include ONLY the texts cited in the manuscript, following the standard specified by ABNT (NBR 6023/2018).
Footnotes should be strictly explanatory, with a maximum length of 260 characters each with a space. When translating a quotation, the original text should not be inserted as a note.
Authors should provide sources of support for the work, including names of sponsors, contract number (if any), along with explanations of the role of these sources.

Manuscripts that do not fulfil the criteria for submission to the Journal will be immediately returned for adaptation.

Digital Assets

Figures (images, illustrations, graphs, maps and drawings) and tables (or charts) must be submitted in separate files from the text, in high resolution, JPG or TIF format, 300 dpi. Tables and charts should be in Word, and graphs and spreadsheets in Excel, with titles and sources indicated. All tables and charts must be numbered and labelled, with the source and access indicated in the caption. All figures must have a caption, be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals and begin with the word "Figure". Applicants must provide permission to use each figure or indicate whether it is in the Public Domain.

Annexes and/or appendices should only be included if they are essential to understanding the text.
