Why do enterprises die? Effects of the Simples Nacional and the economic environment in the bankruptcy rate of brazilian micro and smal enterprises
Abstract
Micro and small enterprises (MSEs) are of fundamental for the Brazilian economy, being responsible for significant portions of the product, besides generating positive externalities, regional development, and income deconcentration. The problem is that these enterprises have high mortality due to internal, sectoral, and external factors. This study aimed to investigate external constraints. The main purpose was to ascertain whether the advent of Simple National in 2006 affected the bankruptcy of MSEs, by deepening measures of tax simplifications. Moreover, it was assessed whether the effects of macroeconomic variables and the Brazilian crisis from 2014 on the bankruptcies are heterogeneous according to the size of the enterprises. Estimates were made for time series with monthly data from 2005 to 2017 to achieve these objectives. The results suggest that the Simple National reduces the bankruptcy of MSEs and that they are more sensitive to the economic situation than medium and large enterprises.
