About the Journal

Revista de Economia Contemporânea (Journal of Contemporary Economics) is a diamond open-access journal in the field of Economics edited by the Institute of Economics at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (IE-UFRJ) since 1997.

Brief Background

The Journal of Contemporary Economics (REC) is a scientific journal published by the Institute of Economics, at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Following the institution's tradition of debate and criticism, REC aims to be a plural publication open to dialogue between the different theoretical currents currently active in expanding the frontiers of knowledge in economics, publishing original and unpublished academic articles on various topics and areas of economic analysis, especially those relevant to the economy of Brazil and Latin America.

Launched in 1997, REC was born a printed journal published twice yearly. From 2005 onwards, it also began to be published in electronic format and on a quarterly basis. In 2014, the printed version was discontinued, and since then, REC has become an exclusively electronic publication. In 2022, REC ceased to be a quarterly publication to adopt the continuous publication model (rolling pass), with one annual issue. Currently, REC is an exclusively electronic journal and publishes approximately 21 articles per year in a continuous flow. All editions are available in the journal's collection on the UFRJ Journal Portal or in the Scielo collection.

The duties and rights of authors, editors, and reviewers follow the Scielo Guide to Good Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publishing.

Focus and Scope

The mission of the Journal of Contemporary Economics is to promote debate and dialogue between the different theoretical and methodological currents currently active in expanding the frontiers of knowledge in the field of Economics through the publication of original and unpublished academic articles that make some contribution from a theoretical or methodological point of view to various topics of economic analysis, especially those that are relevant to the economy of Brazil and Latin America and in the following areas:

  • Economic Thought, Economic History, Methodology, and Political Economy.
  • Macroeconomic Theory, Financial System and Growth Models, and their Applications.
  • Microeconomic Theory, Industry, Innovation, International Trade, and their Applications.
  • Development Theories, Labor Market and Employment, and Income Policies, Public Policies and Welfare.

An academic article is a manuscript that reports the results of theoretical or empirical research. Its structure contains at least an introductory section, which identifies the theme, problem, object, and objectives; a literature review section; a methodological section, describing collection and analysis techniques, data sources, and research procedures; a presentation and discussion section of results or findings; and a conclusion.

An article that has not been previously published in another journal, book, or collection, whether in Brazil or abroad, is considered unpublished. A manuscript based on work presented at a scientific event, a master's dissertation, a Ph.D. thesis, a Discussion Paper, a Working Paper, a preprint, or similar is also considered unpublished.

Studies addressing particular cases, such as a state or municipality, an industry, a company, or a type of product, for example, are of interest to the journal only if they present an original contribution to the literature and results that can be replicated in other cases.
