INSTITUTIONAL EVALUATION, PAIUB, SINAES... INTERVIEW WITH PROFESSOR JOSÉ DIAS SOBRINHO

Abstract

This interview was developed as part of the research “Evaluation of Higher Education in Brazil: conceptions and actors”, with the support of Fapesp, which aimed to investigate the different conceptions of evaluation and how they influenced the evaluation experiences of brazilian higher education, and especially the process of creation of the National Higher Education Assessment System (SINAES). José Dias Sobrinho was interviewed in Sorocaba, on November 4, 2008, having provided important information for the research, much of it published in articles and books. He reviewed and authorized the publication, but it has remained unpublished until today. In the interview, José Dias Sobrinho evokes his work with evaluation, explains clearly his conception about it, reflects on experiences of evaluation of higher education such as Paiub (Institutional Evaluation Program of Brazilian Universities), “Provão” (National Exam of Programs) and Sinaes, and foresees some future developments of the evaluation. Prof. Dias Sobrinho passed away on September 10, 2022. The publication of this interview of someone who was distinguished in his country and in Latin America as a great theorist and creator of institutional evaluation of higher education policies is a way of honoring him and keeping his memory alive.
