The article discusses student dropout rates in higher education based on data from UFMG. Focusing on the 2012 cohort, we investigated to what extent dropout rates in the institution are associated with the socioeconomic profile of students and the characteristics of the degrees they attend, using descriptive statistics and logistic regression models. We tested two hypotheses: dropout rates would be associated with students with lower social and educational backgrounds, and there would be an association between dropout rates and the type of degree, defined in terms of academic level and selectivity. The results showed that dropout rates are only slightly associated with the socioeconomic characteristics of students. On the other hand, they revealed that the academic level and selectivity of the courses that students are enrolled are important factors in explaining differences in dropout rates.
