Abstract

The use of Immersive Learning Technologies (ILT) has become popular in recent years. The aim of this article is to discuss the use of ILT in teaching the theory and history of architecture and urbanism. Starting from a broad bibliographical review on the topic, the aim is to add to the discussion a critical analysis of its implementation and results through the outlining of its own analysis methodology on four scales: sensorial, cognitive, emotional and social. Through a systematic search on digital platforms for scientific articles, three case studies were chosen: immersive virtual reality (immersive virtual reality - IVR), augmented reality (augmented reality - AR) and virtual learning on a gaming platform. The results found demonstrate that the sensorial and emotional dimensions are privileged, especially with the use of digital reconstruction of buildings, an advanced field in architecture, which promotes immersion. Cognitive issues are highlighted in experiences that use gamification, in which the narrative, characters and challenges stimulate learning. However, little is explored about the social issues of learning, with little or no collaborative or interdisciplinary activity. This study, despite its limitations in scope and approach, opens the discussion for the implementation and critical analysis of ILT in the teaching of theory and history of architecture and urban planning and in related areas.
